1. Size does matter. Measure your dog accordingly making sure it is not too tight or too loose, as this may cause problems. A tight costume will affect circulation and can cause discomfort, and injury. A loose outfit can get pulled off easily, or snag on furniture. To ensure seamless tricks or treats venture on that day, it is advisable to let your dog wearing the costume a few days ahead by taking it on and off a few times. This will get your dog used to the ordeal and reduce anxiety on that day.
2. When you make the costume, please make sure there are a few openings. Please take extra consideration on the areas where the dog will more than likely take a bathroom break in between.
3. Stitch on some reflective patches to the costumes. This is important when taking the dog out walking at night and just in case the dog get loose and wonder off. This will help to prevent unforeseen accident and help you to spot right on the dog whereabout.
4. Buy the material that is not too warm. Dogs generate heat very quickly and too heavy of a cloth can cause overheat. Please also making sure that your dog is not running around while wearing the costume to prevent the above mention situation.
5. Avoid using any small parts that the dog might chew off and swallow. Beads are dangerous to the dog especially as it can be fatal if it stuck in the airway swallowing it by accident. If the dog is nipping at the outfit and it has started to come apart, it is probably best to just take it off.
6. While walking the dog trick or treating, using a proper leash under supervision is very important. There are too many distraction and your known behave dog might be a little leery on that night.
7. If you must put a mask or a hat on your dog, please make sure that it is securely and comfortably fastened. Your dog should be able to see as well as hear clearly, while in their costume.
